As Occupational Therapists, our specialty area is in assessment of the day to day functioning of an individual which includes self care, management of household tasks, work and leisure. For this reason, the medico legal assessments are almost always conducted in the individual's home environment.
Should your client require further rehabilitation in any area of self care, this can be arranged prior to the medico legal assessment if required.
The assessment component of the service includes:
- Comprehensive interview
- Functional/physical assessment
- Observation of function in day to day tasks
- Use of various standardized and non-standardized assessment tools and indexes in order to provide an evidenced based opinion
- Reference to norms, stats and clinical reasoning
- Use of current literature references to support our professional recommendations
From the information gathered during the assessment phase, a comprehensive report is compiled and presented in a manner that is very easy to read and use.
An Occupational Therapists' specialty area includes, but is not limited to, the following areas:
- Activities of Daily Living - level of independence and functional ability
- Typical daily routine
- Attendant care/personal care requirements
- Domestic assistance
- Home maintenance assistance
- Equipment needs and approximate costs
- Future therapy needs and costs (occupational therapy)
- Community access/transport
- Comment on work options within current level of transferable skills
- Future accommodation requirements or home modifications required (The details of changes required will be provided, however the solicitor needs to obtain costing of these recommendations from a builder or architect)
